adderstone.jpg

Adderstone House, Belford Sunday 6th  April 2025 1pm - 4pm

Dr and Mrs John and Pauline Clough are generously opening their gardens in support of HospiceCare North Northumberland. They are delighted to share with you their efforts to turn 10 acres of farmland into gardens that complement a lovely early Victorian farmhouse. John and Pauline are 18 years into the project and it continues to be a work in progress. The cherry blossom in the gardens is a spectacular sight in April and features the Prunus Tai-Haku giant white cherry blossoms in the Japanese Garden and various yellow and pink cherry blossoms throughout. Nothing can be guaranteed in a garden but  there are generous swathes of flowering bulbs which add colour and form a delightful display of Spring flowers. Half of the vineyard has been replanted and it is hoped that the grapes will be suitable for making sparkling wine as they mature.

Features include mixed borders, walled garden, orchard, woodland garden, rose walk, formal garden, dry border, boathouse folly, lakeside walk, stream, Japanese garden and Tea house, Shepherd’s Hut bird hide and vineyard.

Adderstone House is accessed from the A1 turning right from the South or left from the North along a no-through road.  Please see the map below for further information.

The Woodland Walks also have some of the oldest Sequoias in the country and other plantings of exotic trees, though Storms Arwen and Malik took their toll, re-planting has commenced. Lesbury Village Sunday 29th June 10am-4pm

All of the gardens opening are in the Parish of Lesbury. Registration will start at the Village Hall which is in the heart of a delightful conservation area with a number of listed buildings. The Parish of Lesbury has a long and varied history. Bronze age and Roman remains have been found and there is evidence of a pre-historic camp just east of the railway station. From Saxon times there has been a stone built church in Lesbury. The village’s early name, Laece Burg meaning ‘the town of the leech or physician’ is from this period.

The church was rebuilt and extended incrementally from Norman times and in the 13th century its importance was demonstrated by the churches of Alnwick, Longhoughton and Alnmouth being ‘subordinate chapelries’. Lesbury continued to be the principal township in the area for a further hundred years.  Entrance fees, raffle, craft and plant sales proceeds to HospiceCare, teas and refreshments proceeds to St Mary's Church, Lesbury.

All the gardens that are open, are in the Parish of Longhoughton. Registration will start at the Community Centre adjacent to the carpark. Refreshments, crafts and plant stalls are located at the Longhoughton Community and Sports Centre. The Parish of Longhoughton has a long and varied history, being a very ancient village - the fine Grade 1 listed church of St Peter and St Paul dates back to Saxon times. In the 16th Century, the settlement was recorded as 'a very long towne' with 13 or 14 small holdings at the north end of the village (now called North End) and the same number to the south (now called South End) - some of the dwellings were occupied by fishermen. The farming and fishing folk worked together supporting each other during all the seasons. Entrance fees, crafts, and raffle to HospiceCare, proceeds of teas, crafts, and plant sales to Longhoughton Community Gardens.

Blagdon Hall  Sunday 5th October 1pm-4pm

Lord Ridley is kindly allowing the public access to his private estate grounds, with all proceeds going to HospiceCare North Northumberland. Blagdon Estate is a family-run estate which has been in the same family ownership since 1700 and retains an historical atmosphere. Autumn is a lovely time of year to visit the Estate. Wander along the meandering paths and experience a riot of colour in the changing leaves before they fall. Enjoy the beautiful lakes and follies, including features designed by architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens. There is also a charming quarry garden containing unusual plants from all over the world. The Autumn colours and rustle and scent of leaves underfoot in the woodland paths in the Parkland are evocative of childhood games and play. This is Autumn Parkland at its best.
